skebrown to visit Mebane, NC

August 1st, 2005

After many months, it looks like skebrown will be coming to visit. I’m frantically putting together a tentative schedule….restaurants, meetings, entertainment, recreation…the whole 9 yards.

He is planning on setting aside some time to play some guitar at my house. Perhaps we’ll have some friends over to listen. I’ll try to put some recordings up after his visit.

Wheeeeee!!!

Dining at home with Chef Paul Coleman

August 1st, 2005

Paul Coleman, professional chef and personal friend, called me at work this past Friday with great news! He was in the supermarket picking up food and was planning on coming by and preparing my family dinner at our house! What a treat!

Anna and I love hanging out with Paul….expecially when he’s cooking a meal. The dinner was crusted pan-seared tuna, yellow rice, and steamed vegetables. And it was fantastic!

On a related note, Paul will be filming a pilot for his original cooking show titled: “Ess’Paul” (Translation: “It’s Paul”). He has already written the opening theme music for his show. I look forward collaborating with Paul on this project. We’ll let you know more as we can!

GD MS WTF?!?!

July 28th, 2005

thanks to non-standard MS file formats I spent 2 hours trying to import a txt file into mysql on a linux box. I had the LINES TERMINATED BY ‘\n’ set, but it was still giving me carriage returns in my table. rar!

I dug into the documentation and found a little bit that said something like:

“Some MS text file formats require you to terminate the lines with ‘\r\n’. This is because MS, for some reason, wants to put a carriage return AND a line break at the end of each line.”

yay.

New song from Sharks Like Tea

July 28th, 2005

Here’s one I hammered out last night. I like alot about this song. For now, I’m calling it Falling Down:

falling_down.mp3

Here are the lyrics as of now:

I know what you’re talking about
No need to explain what it’s all about
I know where you’re coming from
And it’s ok

But watch out for those folks over there
They don’t read the books so they don’t understand
It’s your job to teach it to them
And it’s ok

And they’ll fight you and fight you and fight you
And they’ll fight you and fight you and fight you
And they’ll fight you and fight you and fight you
And it will sting

It doesn’t matter what they’re saying
It doesn’t matter what they’re doing
It doesn’t matter what they’re saying
Because I’m singing

I know what you’re talking about
No need to explain what it’s all about
I know where you’re coming from
And it’s ok

That’s right. I am on track to finish up my undergraduate classes at UNC-CH one year from now. When I’m done, I’ll graduate with a Major in Philosophy (with Honors) and a Minor in Information Systems.

I hope to pursue a graduate degree in one of the following fields starting the Fall of 2006. I will likely work towards a Masters in Information Science, with the possibility of a dual-degree in Buisiness Administration. The SILS program offers a few dual-degree programs.

Woooooooooeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Scribblin’ podcast

July 20th, 2005

Just created a podcast RSS feed for the band Scribblin’.

You can access it here:
http://www.scribblinmusic.com/wp-rss2.php

You will need a podcast client such as iPodder or iTunes. In iTunes, I’m having some difficulty getting this podcast to work.

But it should work under iPodder for now. I’ll get it up and running with iTunes soon and let you know more.

My Ankle: A story in pictures

July 20th, 2005

I thought it would be fun to document the visual progression of my ankle injury. Time is such a great thing. And with this series of photos, I believe I have proven its’ existence. See? The same ankle but it looks different. It has changed over time. Um, at least I think it is the same ankle. I suppose it could be a new ankle at each moment in time, and it just so happens to depict a logical progression such that my mind is fooled into this whole concept of time. But wouldn’t that result in something similar to Zeno’s Achilles and the Tortoise paradox? Hmmmm… Ya know? I think it would! Grrrreat… I’m not even sure how to get out of this one. I’ll have to read more about it. Enough! On with the pictures:

Day 02
Torn ankle ligaments

Day 03
Torn ankle ligaments

Day 04
Torn ankle ligaments

I was in an immobilizing boot, and on crutches, for 9 weeks. For most of those, I kept my ankle wrapped with a bandage and elevated, when possible.

Anna’s Wild Kingdom

July 20th, 2005

Anna came back from the horse farm yesterday with some great photos. Apparently the girls got to see some lizards being born /and/ some grubs in the process of metamorphosing into beetles. Wow. The pictures speak for themselves:

Here you can see the adult lizard guarding the nest of eggs while one is hatching:
Lizard birth, bring born from an egg

A close up of the lizard hatching from its egg:

A grub in the process of metamorphosing into a beetle:
Metamorphasis of a grub to an insect

Aurora showing the grub to Evie:

And, of course, Evie’s reaction to it:

This concludes the first installment of ANNA’S-Anna’s WILD-wild KIIIIIIIIIINGGDOMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!! Stay tuned for more in the future!

as fun as an ankle full of torn ligaments

July 16th, 2005

Just as I was getting into the stride of my new exercising routine, I go an blow out my ankle! Man! I’ve worked up, over the past two weeks, to where I was running 2 miles three tmes a week. Running is one of my favorite forms of exercise probably because I ran so much in high school in soccer and on the track team.

Well, I went out for my jog as the sun was going down and didn’t recognize a spot on the sidewalk as a rock. I rolled my ankle on it and fell right to the ground. After vocally expressing my dissatisfaction with the situation, I examined the rock. If there can exist a rock with the property of being the most perfect rock on which to sprain an ankle, this rock would be it. It was perfectly shaped and had the perfect hardness on which to sprain an ankle. Maybe I should have kept it for scientific study, where scientists could have used it to design better moon-boots for astronauts. But I just threw to the side of the road.

The doctor said I should stay on crutches for at least 3 weeks. He said he expects my particular injury to take at least 6 weeks to heal. Glee……

If you’ve read this far, you may want to see the pictures of my ankle suffering from the torn ligaments.
